Emmy Award-Winning Journalist Advises Regent Students

Take advantage of internship opportunities—that was the best advice Emmy award-winning journalist Kimberley Kennedy shared with aspiring journalists at Regent University.

"You have to start at the beginning," Kennedy explained to a group of Regent journalism students, staff and faculty on April 7. "In the journalism profession, you must work your way from the bottom up. Don't apply to places like TIME magazine without first gaining experience in the smaller market."

Kennedy is the producer, writer and anchor of WSB-TV's popular weekly news and entertainment show, Hot Topics, which airs in Atlanta, Orlando and Charlotte. Kennedy also hosts other television projects in addition to Hot Topics. She won an Emmy Award for her work on the primetime special Behind the Curtain: The Lion King.

During her visit to Regent, Kennedy discussed her career in the news industry, which started at the McNeil-Lehrer News Hour (PBS) in Washington, D.C. She progressed in roles as a reporter and anchor for stations such as WRBL-TV in Atlanta, KDFW-TV in Dallas and WXIA-TV, also in Atlanta.

Kennedy encouraged the journalism students to write about personal experiences in their role as story-tellers. She used her new book, Left at the Altar, as an example. The book documents one of Kennedy's toughest life experiences—when her fiancé called off the wedding the night before they were to be married.

By sharing her story about disappointment and rejection, and the resulting inner struggle with anger towards God, Kennedy said that the book has touched many broken women.
