David Silvey ('90)
David Silvey, School of Business & Leadership alumnus and the author of the book, "The Smart Way to Deal with Stupid People," has had a variety of chapters in his own life.
David grew up in Central Pennsylvania as one of nine children. His parents were missionaries in Ethiopia before he was born. When the family returned to the U.S., his father became a Baptist pastor, school teacher, and then became elementary school principal - David's principal! His mother was a nurse, but David says she mostly stayed home with all of the kids.
David's writing career started in high school where he was chosen as the "Reporter of the Year" by the local newspaper, The Huntington Daily News. The newspaper used him as a school news page reporter. After high school, he attended Grove City College in PA and earned a B.S. in Management Engineering. David enrolled in Regent University's School of Business & Leadership and earned an M.B.A. after working as a systems and industrial engineer. Upon graduation, David was voted the "Outstanding Graduate in the School of Business" by his peers.
A few years after graduating, David went to China as a tent-maker missionary and taught international business courses to Chinese college students. Ten years later, he would again teach in China after studying Mandarin Chinese at the Beijing Language and Culture University for a year. During the ten years in between the teaching stints in China, David worked as an operational internal auditor for a firm called Control Solutions, doing business process analysis and re-engineering. David's "The Smart Way to Deal with Stupid People" was inspired by watching business people deal successfully and unsuccessfully with airline attendants, rental car agents, and hotel clerks during his years of extensive domestic and international travel.
David currently lives in Southern California with his wife and daughter and works part-time as an Operations and Customer Satisfaction Manager for an accounting firm that services churches and nonprofits - when he is not writing!
