Clay Perkins ('04)
Dr. Clay Perkins (SBL, '04), the President of Mid-Atlantic Christian University, approaches his vocation and ministry with a "serve first" mentality. "I've always called myself 'the reluctant President,'" he jokes.
"Whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many" (Matthew 20:27-28). Dr. Clay Perkins identifies this as one of his favorite verses and the driving inspiration behind his approach to life and ministry. "I've always called myself 'the reluctant President'", he jokes. As the President of Mid-Atlantic Christian University, Perkins remarks that the most rewarding aspect of his job is seeing the graduates discover God's will for their lives and observing their excitement as they lead and serve in various ministries. "I love our graduates. I love to encourage them and to keep up with them and hear their excitement and dreams."
The doctoral program at Regent challenged Perkins to understand the complexity of higher education and this molded him for his position as a university president. "Regent demanded and expected academic excellence." According to him, the "world class education" and preparation paid off. "I understand how to deal with culture and to value that heritage and yet how to move to the future that God has for the school."
President Perkins also possess an entrepreneurial background which eventually led to his academic career. This creative response to a tangible need was modeled after the early church leaders, whose dedication to supporting local church ministries inspired and motivated Perkins. "I followed the great heritage of Apostle Paul in pulling up my tent-pegs." Perkins observed various low budget areas while serving in a local church and filled those needs through an entrepreneurial approach.
The proud son of a truck driver, Perkins reflects that he simply wants to be remembered as one "that served others." Dr. Perkins depicts the great influence and leadership a true servant can bring about through their life and ministry.
